Q&A: Last Planet

in SF Local Bands by

How did you come up with the name of the band?

We just wrote down like 100 names – anything we could think of, and then we narrowed it down to a few and made the final decision 5 minutes before we took the stage for our first show. Albero said “it sounds like a band you would think you had heard of before.”

How would you describe your sound?

Modern alt-rock with soul and blues influences

When did you first become interested in playing music?

We’ve all been playing most of our lives. Our lead singer Rai started singing in high school and performing in 2019. We all grew up loving music.

What’s the strangest or funniest thing that’s ever happened to you at a show?

“People don’t know where to put tip money sometimes so they put it in the saxophone bell – it starts to muffle the sound after a while.” – Lucian

What are you listening to these days?

There’s this UK movie about reggae sound systems balled “Babylon”. It has a great soundtrack.

What does music mean to you?

Music is such a pure and authentic way for people to express themselves and connect with others.

How’d you guys first get together to play music?

Cort and Albero met while working at Guitar Center after college. Lucian and Cort were friends from college, so Cort pulled him in. Rai met Lucian through a food delivery job. Lyman came in through mutual friends and we met Ben at the studio. Last Planet grew to its current form slowly but surely.

San Francisco is full of music history. Who are some San Francisco musicians who inspired you?

Sly and the Family Stone, Digital Underground, Third Eye Blind, and Faith No More – they practice at the same facility as us!

What’s the biggest challenge in becoming a musician today?

Not getting caught up in what people are going to think about your music

What are some of your favorite Bay Area music venues?

Great American Music Hall, The Independent, Bottom of the Hill, Davies Symphony Hall, and Milk Bar!

Where do you like to get creative in San Francisco?

“Lit Crawl” events! Also Golden Gate Park!

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to find out about you?

Rai (singer) and Lucian (sax) have been living in Thailand for the past year and a half! The Whiskey Breath video was filmed with them over there (and we wrote and recorded music with the band being separated across the world too). They are back for our run of shows starting in May!

Is there anything you’d like to plug?

We release a new song on the first Friday of every month! And visit lastplanetband.com for our upcoming Nor Cal show dates!
