Q&A: Kolars

in Q&As by

Kolars, the duo comprised of a single guitar player and tap-dancing drummer, is hitting the road this Spring and will be stopping at Bottom of the Hill on March 28. The duo released their debut self-titled album in 2017, and have since been on the up and up. They’ve been featured on Rolling Stone Magazine’s Weekender, London Calling, The Great Escape, Canadian Music Week, and Dot to Dot, and will play Savannah Stopover, Gasparilla Festival, Treefort Music Festival, and more over the next few months.

We wanted to learn more about this unique band so we reached out to their drummer Lauren Brown to chat about how the band first came together, what it’s like being married and in a band together, and how they came up with adding tap dancing to their act.

For our readers that are not familiar with you two, how did you first come together?

Rob and I met centuries ago in NYC. He was the older brother of my friend, and I thought he was the most special thing I had ever seen. Flash forward centuries later, we are playing in a band together.

How would you describe your sound?

We have some genres we created that we feel captures it to an extent: “space blues”, “desert disco”, “glam-a-billy.”

What’s it like being married and in a band together?

Easy and Hard. But I think being in a band with anybody is both easy and hard. The best part is that we both want the other to shine. I like it when Rob’s shiny.

You’re currently on a tour across the US. Do you enjoy life on the road?

I am a road dog, I love it. Kinda sick of Chipotle, though.

You’re set to play San Francisco in a couple of weeks. What do you think of our city?

I LOVE IT. Adopt me.

I heard you guys got caught in a bomb cyclone on your way to a Savannah music festival. What was that all about?

You know, just an 8 1/2 hour drive that should’ve been a 2 hour one. Clenched teeth for an entire day.

How’d you come up with adding tap dancing as a rhythmic element in your music?

Total fluke. I was living with Rob’s sister years ago and he was playing a song with her in our living room. I was tap dancing on the kitchen floor cause I was digging the music. They hired me then and I’ve had a job tapping since!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Touring and then more touring with some touring on top. We finish our Spring US Tour on March 31 and then head to London to next day to tour Europe for a few months.

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to find out about you?

I’m a super dork. But I don’t think that’s much of a surprise.
