SF Local Artist Spotlight: Jamal Corrie

in SF Local Bands by

When did you first become interested in playing music?

I got interested when I was introduced to the xylophone when I was 6 years old.  I started playing piano at age 12, I started singing at age 18 and then I started playing guitar two years ago.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is very post-contemporary and film score-esque. I like to mix guitar, piano, keyboards and computer effects with my voice. I can sing covers from Elvis Presley to the Weekend, but I also create my own music and songs.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I love all works of art from paintings to graphics, modern day life, love, struggle, and passion. Telling a story from my experiences.

What does music mean to you?

Music is the ladder to my soul and a magnifying glass for the emotions.

What do you think of the music scene in San Francisco?

I have not experienced the music scene in San Francisco other than performing Fridays and Saturdays at Hotel Fusion and doing a showcase at the Black Cat But. I would love to explore the music scene more here in SF. If any club is looking for a great performer, hit me up!

What’s your favorite place to hang out in the city?

I love all of San Francisco from Union Square to the Golden Gate Bridge. It is such a beautiful city. My favorite place has to be Fisherman’s Wharf because it is so cool with all the things to do. From watching the famous seals to the awesome carousel, it’s kind of romantic in a way.

What are some of your goals with music?

To be extremely successful in what I love to express and share with others with my music and entertaining. I would love to work with Linda Perry, Tracy Chapman, Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams and of course Rick Rubin. And conquer the World!

If you could open for anyone, who would it be and why?

Ed Sheeran because he has a great voice and is inspirational to me. He’s also super famous and successful and I want to learn from that and understand his character.

What’s one thing that most people would be surprised to find out about you?

I originally wanted to be a film composer but fate had a different plan for me and I realize I love singing and performing. It makes me so happy to see the joy I bring to people when they watch me perform.

You seem to do a lot of street busking. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while performing on the street?

Every weekend I go through something intense and very stressful. Someone poured orange juice all over me. I’ve been spat on, physically attacked a few times. Stolen from. It’s hard work but I love to perform and share my music with all the beautiful people of San Francisco.

Having released albums under Digital Nations, a label founded by Steve Vai, music critic Louis Raphael has remained deeply connected to the pulse of the San Francisco music scene. Following his tenure as the San Francisco Music Examiner for Examiner.com and AXS.com, he embarked on creating Music in SF® to authentically highlight the vibrant offerings of the city's music scene.
