The Curran Theater and the creative team behind the comedy musical Head Over Heels hosted a media day this morning to get the word out about their new production, which features the iconic songs of The Go-Go’s. Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening), the show will perform April 10–May 6, 2018, ahead of its Broadway premiere and will kick-off the Curran’s inaugural season.
According to a press release that went out earlier this week, the play is inspired by a mash-up of posh and punk, an unpredictable, Elizabethan romp about a royal family that must prevent an oracle’s prophecy of doom. In order to save their beloved kingdom, the family embarks on an extravagant journey wrought with mistaken identities, jealous lovers, sexual awakening, scandal, and self-discovery, where everything (and everyone) is not quite what it seems.
We sent our Musical Theater Correspondent, Gavin Delgado, to cover the event and to chat with Jane Weidlin and Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go’s. They talked about how this whole project came together, what it means to them to be on Broadway after all these years, and what the song selection process was like for the musical.
Listen to the full interview below and be sure to check out the Go-Go’s on June 28 as they headline the Fox Theater in Oakland.
