Dua Lipa at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

Dua Lipa Rises High at The Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco

Dua Lipa is all grown up now. Long gone is the little girl that first began covering songs by other artists on YouTube at age 14. Last night at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium she came out a confident young woman sporting a new shorter ‘do (which looked stunning by the way) and performed an hour-and-a-half set with the style and grace of a seasoned superstar.

The time has come for Lipa. The last occasion that I saw her was at the Masonic Auditorium and the time before, at the Great American Music Hall. I wrote then that the next time she’d come to town she’d be playing much bigger venues. Well, my prediction was correct and last night she sold out the much larger Bill Graham Auditorium. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if arenas and stadiums were next on her list of conquests.

What makes this young charismatic singer so exciting, is that not only does she have amazing songs, but her voice is truly unique. It’s a blend of sultry deep vocals combined with some higher end pop sensibilities, a tone that is only hers and one that is quick to recognize. It’s that distinction that few singers possess, but one that is sure to put her at the top of her class.

Last night she played that instrument to the peak of its potential, performing a setlist that was comprised of her latest album that’s spawned seven hit singles, including “Be the One,” “IDGAF” and “New Rules.” She sang hit after hit with high energy, poise, and confidence to an audience that kept screaming for more.

The cute Albanian girl from London England was more than happy to oblige to a ravenous audience and gave them her all last night. This performance served as a chapter in her coming of age story, one that tells the reader that she’s ready for pop stardom. She’s played this city a few times before, but this time it meant something different. Dua Lipa came across as a seasoned pro. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, this is one Youtuber that’s on her way to the top, and she’s playing it by her own rules.
