Baby Tate Rocks the Old School Vibe at the Fox in Oakland

in SF Concert Reviews by

I’m convinced that if Missy Elliot and JJ Fad had a child it’d be Baby Tate. Her old school vibe is such that you can’t help but notice the similarities. And so it’s no surprise that the pint-sized dynamo is actually the offspring of another 90s MTV staple, Dionne Farris. Even if the name doesn’t sound familiar at first, if you lived through the decade, you must have heard her iconic song “I Know” on heavy rotation in malls everywhere.

Baby Tate’s sound is obviously different from her mom’s. For one, she’s a fierce MC. Last night at the Fox, opening for Charli XCX, she was dropping fast heavily syncopated rhymes like no other. All the while breaking up her set with genuine soulful R&B. Yes, this baby’s got her mom’s pipes as well. But what really sets her apart is her personality. At times sweet and bubbly, the next bougie and badass, you can’t help but be entertained by this charismatic up and coming artist.
