The popular rock-reggae band, Tribal Seeds, will bring their Roots Party Tour to The Fillmore in San Francisco tonight. They’ll be promoting the release of their brand new Roots Party EP, a follow-up to the band’s 2014 full-length album, Representing, which charted on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums.
In preparation for their gig, we spoke with lead singer Steve Jacobo about how the band first got together, how they define their sound, and what they like to do when visiting our beautiful city by the Bay.
How did Tribal Seeds first get started?
We started in high school I think around 2003 with some friends. We just got instruments and started practicing in our friend’s garage.
How would you define your sound?
We would define our sound as roots rock reggae, basically.
You’re playing the Fillmore in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, but it looks like you’re no stranger to the Bay Area. What do you like to do up here?
We love playing for the awesome fans, eating the great food in the area, and taking in the scenery and vibes here.
What inspires you to write music?
A lot inspires us…problems with the world, ancient mysteries and truths, a yearning of a deeper understanding of the reality of things, and just life in general.
Who are your biggest influences?
Our biggest influences are Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, and all the reggae legends.
What are some topics that your music deals with?
Our music deals a lot with weed, politics, biblical/historical inspirations, love, etc.
What bands/artists are you currently listening to?
No one at the moment. I tend to play classical when I get tired of hearing the same things.
What do you think of the current reggae scene?
It’s good! There’s a lot of talent and it’s cool to see everyone’s different styles.
What’s one thing that most people would be surprised to find out about you?
I’m a fuckin nerd.
