Bebe Rexha and Marc E. Bassy

Q&A: Marc E. Bassy

Bay Area singer-songwriter, Marc E. Bassy, just released his debut album Gossip Columns, which features cameos from big names like Kehlani, KYLE, YG, Bobby Brackins, Hailee Steinfeld, Thundercat and G-EAZY (including their platinum-certified song “You and Me”). About the new release, Marc said, “I chose this album title because these tracks are essentially sensationalized stories from my personal life, experience, and observation. I have always dug into these stories as sources for inspiration, and being based in the muck and mire of Los Angeles, a tabloid-ish picture is what I have painted within this album.”

The release coincides with the Bebe & Bassy Tour, which kicked off in Seattle, Wash., featuring co-headlining performances from both Marc and Bebe Rexha. They’re set to make their way down to San Francisco tomorrow night for a performance at The Warfield. In between rehearsals, the singer was kind enough to answer a few questions for us where we caught a quick glimpse into the mind of Bay Area local that’s on the up and up.

I read somewhere that you’re from San Francisco. It’s great to connect with a local artist that’s doing so well. How did you begin your career as a songwriter in the Bay Area?
I began by competing in poetry slams on Valencia street.

How did you make your way down to LA?
I linked up with my best friend from High School who was also into music and we just made the decision that this is what we wanted to do. There was no plan b.

What made you want to go solo?
Honestly, it was just a natural progression. It kept getting harder to manage to be in a band, and my songwriting career was presenting me with more opportunities.

How would you describe your current musical style?
Try as I might, I’ve never been able to really articulate my musical style. I just do what feels right.

You had a lot of success with the single “Plot Twist” which featured a cameo by Kyle. How did that collab come about?
Kyle’s just my homie, we’ve been wanting to do a song together for a minute.

You’ve got a new album coming out entitled “Gossip Columns,” that features some pretty impressive names. Can you talk a little about your collaborators and featured artists on the new music?
We Linked up with YG and Thundercat for “Westside Love.” That was dope. Also got the homies G Eeazy, Kehlani, and Bobby Brackins on there, of course.

You’re about to embark on a tour with Bebe Rexha. What can San Francisco fans look forward to this go around?
A crazy show. This is our first tour that’s a full production so I’m hella excited.

When you’re on tour and land in San Francisco, what are some places you like to hang out and things you like to do?
I like to go to Hazel’s Kitchen on Missouri street. I also like going to Potrero Hill and kick it.

What’s one thing that most people would be surprised to find out about you?
Sometimes I fast and only drink goat’s milk! lol
